Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in America as Mexican Independence Day. Actually, I think that just as Hallmark created Valentine’s Day in order to sell more cards, Corona created Cinco de Mayo to sell more beer.

Last year my husband and I were in Mexico on Cinco de Mayo, and there was not a sign of Cinco de Mayo as we know it (no paper flags aflyin’, no sombreros on the wall, no Corona or guacamole at the bar, not even a measly corn chip to tip the unknown traveler off to the fact that it was Independence Day).

So while Cinco de Mayo may not be so important to the entire country of Mexico, and may actually be held sacred only by the brewers of Dos Equis and Corona, it remains an important day in our household. Not because we have Mexican heritage or a taste for imported beer, but rather, it is our own, shall we say, End of Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo is the day my husband and I were married, and today is our five year anniversary. Strike up the Mariachi band!!!

At the risk of putting you all off a little, I simply must crow a bit about my wonderful husband. This morning, he woke me up with (are you ready for this?) breakfast in bed!!! Now how amazing is that? Isn’t that the sweetest thing you’ve ever heard? Before I had a chance to even realize that it was our anniversary, I was sipping an espresso, and eating an omelet! Oh, how I love this man! I truly have married the most wonderful man on the face of the Earth!

So, you ask, what wonderful, romantic surprise do I have up my sleeve? After all, I am an experienced, creative event coordinator, I simply MUST have come up with something delectable for this very special occasion. Now, let me share with you the extent of my romantic creativity; a few days ago I picked up the phone and made a dinner reservation for two at Café Juanita.

Wow, so original! So unusual! So, BORING! True. It is a pretty boring idea, especially given the great surprise I received this morning, but you see, we love good food nearly as much as we love each other. Since we have a house packed to the rafters with stuff, I figured that the very best thing we could share was time together enjoying a wonderful meal. For those who don’t know it, Café Juanita has an incredible reputation. We haven’t had the chance to try it yet, so we are really looking forward to sharing something new.

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!
